Re-Framing Failure, Building Resilience and Managing Stress

There are no failures, only feedback.
— Richard Bandor

Talking about failure, resilience and stress in one 3 hour workshop is a tall order, but all three are inextricably linked. We need resilience to manage failure and stressors and we only build resilience through overcoming failure and stress!

This workshop (like all HJC workshops) has two components. The first explores failure, stress and resilience by engaging with a living metaphor: the horse. Participants will learn the horsemanship approach to failure while building a respectful relationship with one of our HJC horses and be coached as they discover their individual pain points.

Participants will deepen their awareness and understanding of what failure means to them and how that has fed stress, through learning horsemanship principles in our safe collaborative environment.

All participants will have the opportunity to engage with and learn from Ellen and the HJC herd.

The second component will take place in the HJC indoor facility with a warm drink in hand! Participants will take a facilitated deeper dive into the experience they had with the horses and use what they learned in the arena to re-frame their thinking and develop strategies which they can implement in their lives.

Program will include a light snack and warm beverage.

All programs adhere to Public Health Guidelines in regard to Covid-19.

Horse portion of the program is in our horse facility. Please dress for the weather.

Please take your own mask.

*All programs at HJC operate with the strictest of confidentiality at heart. Emotional and physical safety are a high values for our programming and our facility. We ask all participants to hold the confidentiality of each individual in high regard. Assertive Communication Skills: An HJC Workshop

FDCC746B-5BF6-4CF3-A34F-F27AF157511E.jpeg

There is no such thing as being “too assertive”.

Assertive: n. an adaptive style of communication in which individuals express their feelings and needs directly, while maintaining respect for others. A lack of assertiveness may contribute to depression and anxiety, whereas maladaptive approaches to assertiveness may manifest as aggression. ~ APA Dictionary of Psychology

Healthy workplaces are ones which are led with assertiveness and engage in assertive communication across all levels of business. Have you ever felt as though you get your toes stepped on at work? Or conversely, have you ever been accused of being a “bulldozer” running over any person in your path? Assertiveness skill development can remedy both such conditions.

This workshop has two components. The first introduces assertiveness concepts by engaging with a living metaphor: the horse. Participants will be guided on an assertiveness journey learning how to identify where they are on the assertiveness scale and then develop the personal assertive communication skills they require, through learning horsemanship principles.

All participants will have the opportunity to engage with and learn from Ellen and the HJC herd.

The second component will take place in the HJC indoor facility with a warm drink in hand! Participants will take a facilitated deeper dive into the experience they had with the horses and use what they learned to develop strategies which they can implement in their respective workplaces.

Overall learning outcomes:

  • Identify and recognize assertive behaviour.

  • Correctly differentiate between passive, aggressive and assertive behaviour.

  • Explore and practice assertive boundary building.

  • Practice asserting yourself.

  • Develop personal strategies for workplace assertiveness.

Program will include a light snack and warm beverage.

All programs adhere to Public Health Guidelines in regard to Covid-19.

Horse portion of the program is in our horse facility. Please dress for the weather.

Please take your own mask.

Closing the leadership gap: A program for Mothers\Daughters etc.

SESSION DATE: October 8th 9:30 am! (It’s a PD Day and yes we are encouraging you to play hooky!)

"You can't be what you can't see." ~Marian Wright Edelman

**This workshop is offered at a low rate as a part of HJC’s continued commitment to closing the leadership gender gap. HJC has pledged to offer at least one opportunity per month at these reduced rates to make programs for women and girls accessible.

Mothers\Daughters, Aunts\Nieces, Grandmothers\Granddaughters - or all combinations of multi-generational women, girls, Two-spirit, trans and non-binary people - are invited to participate in a half day (3.5 hour) confidence and leadership building workshop with Ellen and the HJC herd.

Research continues to demonstrate that by the early age of 8 years, girls begin to rapidly lose confidence compared with their male peers. These confidence deficiencies often follow our youth into adulthood. We want to break that cycle!

Join us for a fun morning of learning, horsemanship activities and confidence building across generations! We want to not only surround young girls with positive messaging but lead by example and what more powerful message is there than two people in different generations learning together?

No horse experience required.

Please note this is NOT a horseback riding lesson.

Children must be aged 10-12 years - accompanying adult has no age limit!

Coffee\tea\cider and a light snack provided.

You read that right - 5:30 a.m. start time!

If getting up and getting out before sunrise isn’t an act of intentionality, I’m not sure what is.

There is something special about being at the farm before most of the world has woken up. It’s a time not everyone gets to be a part of - it’s reserved for those of us fortunate enough to have our own properties with our animals on site and I want to share it with 4 individuals this June.

Join the HJC herd (and me) at our beautiful new facility in Nine Mile Creek, while we greet the day, explore intentional leadership with the HJC horses and set our intentions for the coming week. Learn the value of clear intentions, explore intentionality in our day to day lives and develop strategies for the future.

Each session will involve a demonstration/opportunity with the HJC herd as well as a chance to debrief or unpack the experience.

No horse experience required.

I'll be right there with you pouring the coffee!

Four mini-sessions over the course of four weeks this coming June, designed to jump start your week - to set clear intentions, provoke deep introspective thought and ultimately help you to move forward in the direction of your dreams.

Limited spaces available.

Women's Boundary Building Assertiveness Workshop

2DC664FB-A78F-45AA-AF3B-ECACA5A70AA6.jpeg

Healthy boundaries lead to healthy relationships.

“When we fail to set boundaries and hold people accountable, we feel used and mistreated. This is why we sometimes attack who they are, which is far more hurtful than addressing a behavior or a choice.”
Brené Brown, The Gifts of Imperfection

This workshop (like all HJC workshops) has two components. The first introduces healthy boundary building by engaging with a living metaphor: the horse. Participants will learn how to build respectful boundaries with one of our HJC horses and be coached as they discover their individual pain points.

Participants will be guided on an assertiveness journey, learning how to identify where they are on the assertiveness scale and then develop the personal assertive communication skills they require to set healthy boundaries, through learning horsemanship principles.

All participants will have the opportunity to engage with and learn from Ellen and the HJC herd.

The second component will take place in the HJC indoor facility with a warm drink in hand! Participants will take a facilitated deeper dive into the experience they had with the horses and use what they learned in the arena to develop strategies which they can implement in their lives.

Overall learning outcomes:

  • Recognize the effects of unhealthy boundaries.

  • Correctly differentiate between passive, aggressive and assertive behaviour.

  • Explore and practice assertive boundary building.

  • Practice asserting yourself.

  • Develop personal strategies for healthy boundary building.

Program will include a light snack and warm beverage.

Horse portion of the program is in our unheated horse facility. Please dress for February.

Living with intention requires us to step into the person we want to be and move toward what we want in our work and personal lives.

This workshop, created by women for women, has two components. The first introduces a memorable and effective leadership coach: the horse. In the arena setting, Ellen Jones will use her horses to demonstrate the importance of intentional living and leading - and highlight examples of how it could play out in everyday life.

Following a networking break, Elizabeth Pedersen will share insights into the common barriers to effective communication and provide useful tools to add to your communication toolbox. You will leave the session with some tangible practices you can incorporate into your daily communication right away.

The morning will wrap up with an evaluation as well as an open discussion about the training and your impressions. Your insights will be invaluable as we further develop and expand this important training concept for broader delivery in 2021. In exchange for your feedback, we are offering this experience at a greatly discounted price of $60 HST included.

We hope you will join us in this unique experience.
